Taran,,s speech 2018

Good morning everyone!
How on earth do I make the world a better place?....I'm just a little fella....only 10 years old!! How on earth can I make a difference?
Well.....what if I follow our school motto? "Be the best I can be"......That would be a good start surely?! I can strive to be kind to people, there could definitely be more kindness in the world. I could be a tidy kiwi and look after our environment, picking up litter and planting trees.
I can help people too....I already help my mate Jack on his bike and I help my mum and dad all the time.....bringing in the firewood, mowing the lawns, cutting up the veges for tea.......sometimes the list seems endless!!
But how will things like tidiness and kindness really help the WORLD?? The world is such a big place and I'm such a little dude!
Well if I take a big LEAP forward to when I'm reeeaaally old.....like 20....what will I be able to achieve then?? Well I guess I'll be a lifeguard by then so I'll be spending my summers on patrol with my dad, helping keep people safe. I might be a famous inventor by then!! I've got some amazing inventions stored up here....they need a bit more work though.
My first job will be to tackle the great pacific garbage patch, that babies gonna be non existent by the time I'm done with it, my solar powered eco friendly zero footprint garbage muncher is going to obliterate it!! And my wind powered rocket will one day take off from Mahia, blasting into space to repair the ozone layer with recycled tin foil dust.
Kindness is super important too. I hate to think of people out there being lonely and sad so my plans for a worldwide interactive friendship station will zap all of that!!
Life continues rolling on though and eventually I will take another big leap forward to 40.....ancient!!! What will "being the best I can be" mean when I'm 40?
Well, hopefully my inventions have helped to solve some really big world problems by then, our ozone layer will be fixed and the planet will be a cleaner, greener place to live. I might have kids of my own by then (eeuuww!) so it'll be MY job to teach THEM how to make THEIR world a better place.
Yeah I'm starting to see the bigger picture now.....all of the little things we do now as little people lay the foundations for the bigger things later on.
Picking up litter now could develop into creating the machine that will clean our oceans. Being a thinker.....not a stinker.....helps the crazy dreams I have now become a reality later on.
And the kindness I show in the playground now, at school, could one day change the life of lonely people all around the world.
Being the best I can be might mean small things now when I'm just 10 but if I keep living by that motto, the small things will become big things....big changes....and a better world.
